What are the differences between a PCR test, an ART test and a serology test?
During a PCR swab test, a clinician swabs the back of your nose or throat for the specimen to detect the presence of virus in your respiratory system. The specimen is then sent to a laboratory to be analysed using a technique called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) which takes hours to produce results. PCR swab test is highly accurate and is considered the gold standard to confirm if a person is infected with Covid-19. However, it is relatively costly and takes time due to the process involved.
An ART (Antigen Rapid Test) swab test, also called an antigen test, uses swab specimens to detect antigens – substances that indicate your body is fighting Covid-19. It is almost as accurate as a PCR test, can be done quickly in 15 minutes, at home by yourself or under the supervision of a medical professional. The simple process means that it is faster and less costly than a PCR test.
A serology test detects the presence of antibodies in the body from a blood sample, indicating if you have recently been vaccinated or infected with COVID-19. It is currently required if you travel to China.
Can I do an ART test for my travel?
Yes, you can, if the country you travel to accepts ART test results.
